Model Development through Exploratory Learning (MoDEL)

MoDEL is a process in which students work in groups to explore models of scientific phenomena, discuss patterns and trends, make predictions, and learn disciplinary core ideas to develop robust explanatory models. Through modeling, students demonstrate their conceptual understanding of the scientific principles and concepts. This process was inspired by the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) work of the POGIL Project and also includes a focus on process skills in addition to content development. MoDEL differs from POGIL in that the content outcomes of a MoDEL always focus on the development of content-rich conceptual models.

You can find our Chemistry and Physics MoDELs linked below. If you choose to use these MoDELs in your classroom, we would love your feedback on how the activity went and how it could be improved.
